I returned to St. Mary's Lighthouse in Whitley Bay again this morning, for another attempt after last week's disappointing results. The tide was in (probably a little too far), which was a marked improvement. The only down-side was that there wasn't a lot of light. Even half an hour into sunrise, the best I got was a little side-lighting on the clouds in the distance, but nothing on the foreground.
I took a bunch of exposures, and couldn't decide which I preferred, so I've posted them all here. The slightly under-exposed shots accentuate the dramatic sky, but at the expense of detail in the lighthouse itself. I figured this was okay though, since my 50mm prime shrinks the lighthouse down to an insignificant spelk in the distance, anyway.
I'm really starting to fall out of love with the 50mm focal length. The Zeiss is an incredible lens, once you get to know it properly, but 50mm is proving to be just too tight for my needs. I'm thinking about trading it in for the Zeiss 35mm or 25mm prime, so that I can get more dramatic foregrounds in my landscape shots.
I wouldn't switch back to a Canon or a zoom for anything in the world. I love the purity of a single prime lens, and the challenges it brings to any kind of photography. I also love the unique character that the Zeiss lens has, regardless of how sharp it is (mine's razor-sharp).
Oh, I almost forgot; this is the only decent capture I got last week. I arrived late, missed sunrise, and the tide was out much further than I expected, so I didn't get any water. This shot was okay though; I used an f/2 aperture to create a very shallow depth-of-field, which helped accentuate the early morning mist.
